The Synergy combines two innovative technologies that make it simpler to operate, simpler to shift, and simpler to maintain than any other road bike on the market.

• The first is Shimano's Alfine 8-speed internal gear hubs - whereby all the gearing is neatly tucked away inside the rear wheel. These advanced hubs are Shimano's most efficient internal hubs and offer incredibly smooth shifting and a versatile gear range in a compact space.
• The second is the Versa Road Shifter - the first integrated shift-brake lever for Shimano's internal hubs for use on drop-bar road bikes. All the gears are controlled using a single shifter on the right side. This simplifies shifting and enables you to shift at any time - while pedaling, coasting, or even at a complete stop.

The Synergy uses the Shimano Alfine 8-speed internal hubs. These innovative hubs are like a transmission in your car - they compress all the gearing inside a compact sealed hub that offers smooth, responsive shifting and incredible durabilty and efficiency. In fact, studies have proven that the internal hub and single chainring combination offers efficiency equal to (and more consistent than) external derailleur based systems - across the full range of gears and across all torque loads.

The Versa shifter was designed specifically to control this internal hub, enabling you to change gears at any time - while pedaling, coasting, and even at a complete stop. Now you can cover the same terrain with easier, faster, more consistent shifter, without needing derailluers, chainrings, cassette sprockets and multiple shifters.

In addition, the Alfine 8-speed hubs have nearly the same range as derailleur systems. In fact, the Synergy offers 95% of the gear range of a compact double chainring, and 92% of the range of a full triple chainring. So don't let the number of speeds mislead you. With the Synergy's 8-speed design, you get a tremendous gear range in fewer steps - eliminating all the overlapping and redundant gears of derailleur systems.
